4-day sculpture workshop with the most beautiful natural stones from Zimbabwe
Introduction
The sculpture workshop is planned to take place as an integrated part of Artweek 2025 at Lundsgård Gods, Kerteminde.
The ambition is that the Sculpture Workshop can add an extra dimension to the dialogue between art, artist and audience and reduce the distance between exhibiting artists and the viewing audience by presenting both finished artworks and the process leading up to them through lively activities.
The sculpture workshop's performing stonemasons are a wonderful mix of happy amateurs and experienced sculptors, as anyone with the desire and courage to design and create their own sculpture in stone under expert guidance can participate in the Sculpture Workshop.
Almost exclusively hand tools are used, so that the soul can follow the process. In addition, the dust and noise levels are limited (to pleasant clinking sounds) for everyone, both performing workshop participants, exhibiting artists and the audience.
The Course /Sculpture Workshop
The workshop focuses on each participant experiencing rapid progress and at the same time being able to gain enjoyment and joy through the creative process, which is mentally relaxing. A workshop where you get to use your body and explore your inner creativity, which you may not have known you had. After 4 days of workshop experiences, you will have your own unique handmade stone sculpture.
The choice of motif for the sculpture is completely open and up to the individual participant. The figure is hiding inside the raw stone. So can/will you free it?
Raw stones from Zimbabwe are used, which are mineral-rich semi-precious stones with very varying color schemes. The stone types chosen for the workshop are chosen in hardness, so that it should be possible to come home with a finished result after completing the course.
Participants can choose a stone up to 15 kg to work with in the workshop. If a larger stone is chosen (which will require more processing), a fee of 50 kr. per kilo will be charged for excess weight at the start of the course. After the course, there is the option to buy additional stones to take home for those who simply can't get enough.
The instructor himself works both abstractly and figuratively and can therefore provide advice and guidance in the technique itself, but also in the choice of form of expression. Instructor/artist Rune Frederiksen (b. 1962) is a sculptor and painter. He has participated several times in the censored exhibition in Kerteminde Artweek. He works with sculptures in stone, wood and metal and paintings in acrylic. Rune Frederiksen speaks Danish and English. Instagram: @runes_art. Facebook: Rune Frederiksen.
The workshop class size is planned for 10 active participants. This allows plenty of time for one-on-one assistance and mentoring. All necessary tools are provided (hammer, chisel, rasp, file, sandpaper, etc.), but participants are welcome to bring their own tools.
During this workshop you will be introduced to various processing techniques with hand tools and will be introduced to working with chisels, chisels, rasps, files and sanding (shaping), as well as post-processing methods with washing, heating, waxing and polishing (finishing).
The goal is that all participants should be able to leave the course with the knowledge and skills to be able to create their own stone sculpture from idea, execution to completion the next time.
A 4-day workshop with 1 instructor from 10:00 to 16:00 costs 3200 DKK per participant. (Price includes material and loaned tools. Stones up to 15 kg).
The course takes place outdoors. You must bring a change of clothes that can withstand getting dusty 😊
4 day course schedule:
Day 1
Introduction to the Sculpture Workshop – An opportunity to look around at the sculpture examples brought by the instructors and explore texture, form and artistic styles.
Introduction to the tool – become familiar with the different tools and their use during the different stages of the workflow, so that participants are familiar with the optimal use of the different tools for each step of the workflow.
Stone selection – Choose the stone with the shape, color and potential that you want to work on. Remember that twice as much work must be put into a stone that is twice as big.
– and then you just have to get started!
Day 2, 3 & 4
You are working towards your goal. – While the participants work on their own sculpture, instructor Rune Frederiksen will help individually with support and guidance on ideas and technique and to keep the process on track towards the end result.
You should be allowed to work at your own pace, but help is always at hand. Sometimes you just need a little guidance, while other times you may need crisis help and support in the decision to abandon the original ideas. Rune is there to help you and the other participants in the work towards having your vision realized and set in stone.
Finishing and varnishing -The workshop can hopefully end with a joint presentation/evaluation of our experiences and results, as well as a toast to the new sculptures and stonemasons.
