After several years of work, the arts and culture industry in Denmark now has a common Fair Practice Codex, which is intended to strengthen decent working conditions for artists and cultural creators. The codex was developed in collaboration between the Danish Artists' Council and the Fair Practice Culture initiative, which is run by the Association of Visual Artists and the Danish Composers' Association.
The Code describes what fair and decent working conditions for artists look like, based on five values: Fair payment, Sustainable working life, Diversity, Transparency, Trust. It is aimed at everyone who employs, collaborates with or provides grants to artists. The Code is also a tool for artists to enter into fair agreements about collaborations and assignments.
The code is the result of a collaboration between the Danish Artists' Council and the Fair Practice Culture initiative, run by the Danish Composers' Association and the Danish Visual Artists' Association. It is inspired by the Dutch Fair Practice Code, but adapted to a Danish reality and is supported by the Danish Artists' Council's 22 member organizations across the entire arts and cultural scene.
Why a Fair Practice Code?
Art and culture are an indispensable part of Danish society, which is why professional working conditions for artists are an important common concern. Figures and experiences show that artists in Denmark typically have a working life characterized by unpredictability, economic uncertainty and often unregulated working conditions. The Code does not replace, but supplements, supports and backs up existing collective agreements and collective agreements. It makes it possible to identify all the conditions that should be taken into account when entering into fair agreements on professional artistic work.
Come and hear more and join us in celebrating the launch of the Fair Practice Code on June 17th in Copenhagen and June 19th in Aarhus. Everyone is welcome!
