Egg tempera masterclass

Egg tempera masterclass
Helle Witte from the Free School of Art offers an intensive and immersive masterclass course in egg tempera for professional visual artists.
The course is aimed at artists who want an in-depth understanding of materials and an expanded technical repertoire based on classic Italian Renaissance painting techniques that can be used in a modern way.
Content and focus: The teaching revolves around egg tempera as a painting medium and its historical and material roots. The work is experimental and practical with:
– egg tempera and pigment understanding
– production of colours from raw pigments
– marble gesso and lime gesso based on hare glue
– gilding with 22 carat gold leaf
– painting on wooden boards, boxes and smaller objects (including non-religious icon formats)
– exercises on thick watercolor paper
Participants make their own colors and emulsions, including gesso with marble powder sourced from marble quarries in Tuscany and traditional hare glue.
The course combines technical immersion with visual work, including landscape studies based on the instructor's model and individual interpretation. Participants are encouraged to bring their own sketches and works from their own practice for inspiration.
Yield: Participants are expected to achieve:
– in-depth material knowledge of egg tempera and related techniques
– experience in manufacturing own pigment and binder systems
– practical experience with classical painting techniques in a contemporary artistic context
– finished works produced during the course
