AVAL course: Masterclass: Mycelium as material and method

September 17 at 17:00-19:00

Masterclass by Pernille Emilia Kjær: Rhizomatic formations: mycelium as material and method (part 2)

Thursday, September 17, 2026, 17-19 p.m.

See more about visual artist Pernille Emilia Kjaer

With fungal mycelium as a collaborator, living works take shape. This process calls for following the slowness of growth and zooming in on the rhizomatic networks we are part of.

In the second part of the masterclass Rhizomatic Formations, visual artist Pernille Emilia Kjær will introduce participants to “myco dough”, a moldable, clay-based mycelium mass. The basic cultivation techniques from part 1 will be built on, with a focus on expanding the sculptural potential of the material. We will again work with the beginner-friendly oyster caps, but there will also be the opportunity to experiment with reishi mycelium.

The workshop begins with a joint conversation about the initial experiences with the mycelium as a material, while the results from the previous workshop are studied. However, everyone can participate regardless of whether they have been to the first part.

This time, participants are invited to bring materials, objects, molds or other things from their own practice, so that together we can experiment with incorporating mycelium into our own work and start individual projects and work ideas.

In continuation of the more practical focus, the workshop can also be used to work on concrete works or material experiments for AVAL's open call for the exhibition Materia Modify. It will be held in Hospitalshaven in May 2027, see here. for more info.
