UBVA course: Copyright, digitization and AI

May 29 at 09:00-16:00

Copyright, digitization and AI

The world is becoming more and more digital. Now computers are even starting to think for themselves, via “artificial intelligence”. This is leaving its mark on the whole of society, and also on copyright. Among other things, the Copyright Act has received a large number of new rules on AI and digitalization due to the EU directive on copyright in the digital single market. Many of the rules are difficult, and they create many questions of doubt. It is important to be able to answer them if you want to navigate the new digital, copyright reality.

In the course we focus on:

  • Can works created using AI be protected?
  • In that case, who owns the copyright, the user or the AI developer?
  • Can works created using AI infringe on other works?
  • If so, who is responsible, the user or the AI developer?
  • What if it's not about works, but about databases? Performances of performing artists? Sound recordings?
  • Can AI be used to review large amounts of data, including databases and journals?
  • What if they say no?
  • What are the rules on “text and data mining”?
  • What does copyright law say about digitization of protected material, including "orphan works" and "out of commerce works".

Hear about that, and much more, at UBVA's course Copyright, Digitization and AI.
