Artistic research plays a central role in the development of both the field of visual arts and society. It contributes to deepening our understanding of the world, both around us and within us. Artistic research makes it possible to make artistic development accessible and ensures that researching artists get the necessary time to reflect on and communicate their discoveries and development.

There is a need to strengthen the understanding of how artistic research is carried out in close relation to the artistic practice, and how it can unfold and further develop the work and field of the visual arts. Artistic research should be recognized on an equal footing with other areas of research. Instead of debating the legitimacy of the field, the focus should be on supporting and promoting its growth.

Despite artistic research's considerable value to society, it is rarely prioritized at the same level as other research fields. At the Danish academies, it is – in contrast to many other countries – not possible to apply for a research-based artistic PhD. It is a limitation that must be changed.

In addition, there is a need to diversify the institutional framework and funding opportunities, so that the diversity of artistic research is strengthened.

The Association of Visual Artists has therefore set up a research committee.
