Expired: Open call: mass hail to Godthaab church

04.01.23 | Open Call

Proposals are now open for new violet mass hail for the Godthaab church in Frederiksberg.

The deadline is 20 March 2023.

We invite visual artists, weavers, designers and others with a passion for clothing.

Who are we

The Godthaab church's parish council has decided to acquire a new violet mass hailer for the church, and to work with that task a working group consisting of employees at the church and members of the parish council has been set up. The Parish Council offers this Open Call.

With this Open Call, we invite serious bids on design, materials and possibly decoration within the described framework.

About the Godthaab church

Godthaab church is a folk church in Frederiksberg, it was built in 1911. You can read more about the church HERE.

See pictures of Godthaab Church's church room HERE.

The Godthaab church is open to visitors Tuesday – Friday at 10-13, but closed during funerals. We encourage you to visit the church room.

Religious services etc. appears from the church's calendar on the church's website HERE.

About trade fairs

  • A messehagel is a piece of cloth in the form of a cloak or an overcoat, which the priest wears over his priest's dress during parts of the service, e.g. under the altar. Please read more HERE.

Our expectations and requirements for a new fairground

  • The mass hail must have its starting point in the Advent and Lent season of the church year, therefore it must be in the violet color scale in terms of color. See more about the liturgical colors HERE.
  • Inspiration for Advent and Lent can be found HERE.
  • Any motifs and symbolism must refer to Advent and Lent, preferably in a new interpretation.
  • It must be designed based on the space of the Godthaab church, so that it forms a visual part of the church space.

In addition, practical considerations must be taken into account

  • A mass gown is work clothing that must fit into the church space, while also being part of the liturgy and the atmosphere in the church space.
  • Messehaglen is the outermost layer. Under a mass hagel there is both a mass shirt, priest's dress and the priest's own clothes. Therefore, the fairing shot must neither be too hot (compact) nor too heavy.
  • Special requirements are placed on the fabric's durability, as a trade fair is expected to be able to last for 20 – 40 years.
  • It must be possible to clean the mess hall.
  • It is a basic requirement that the neck opening is just cut off at the back, as the mass shawl is on top of the priest's dress and the mass shirt, and the neck hole must also be suitable to be able to lie under the pipe collar.
  • A trade fair must be easy to put on and take off.
  • It must be taken into account that the Mass Hagel must be able to fit priests of different sizes. Traditionally, a fairground is 110-115 cm in both width and height. If a fairground is too wide, it will have a harder time fitting everyone. If you are in doubt, we suggest that you contact the chairman of the working group, Anette Bekker Kjærgård: abkfrb@live.dk
  • Considerations regarding material selection and design should be included in the proposal.

Process plan for this Open Call

  • The deadline for submission of proposals in the form of a pitch/sketch is 20 March 2023.
  • The committee will then process the received proposals and expects to select 2-3 of the proposals; see next section.
  • We expect to have processed the received proposals on 20 April 2023.
  • We are not obliged to select any of the proposals if we find that they do not meet our wishes.
  • The 2 – 3 proposers whose proposals go further in the process will receive a fee of DKK 15.000 each for the further work. The winning proposer will be paid the fee as part of the final fee.
  • We have a budget of up to DKK 100.000 for the winning proposal for full remuneration of the artist, covering costs for materials and any others involved in the design and production of the fair.
  • Proposers whose proposals do not proceed in the process will be rejected without further justification and will not receive a fee.
  • It is expected that the proposers send a relevant and short CV.
  • A possibly The Power Point presentation of the proposal should not contain more than 10 slides.
  • We prefer to receive the proposals electronically.

Process plan for the final selection among the 2-3 who will advance to the 2nd round with their proposal

  • The 3 selected proposers must elaborate and detail their proposal.
  • The final decision on which proposal is accepted is made by the entire parish council and will be announced in October 2023.
  • A contract will be drawn up for the task.
  • We do not undertake to select any of the submitted proposals.

How to apply in this Open Call

  • We ensure that applications are processed with complete discretion.
  • The submitted proposals will only be considered by the committee and the choirmaster.
