The need for networks, better support systems and increased visibility were among the main points.
How can artist-run exhibition spaces be strengthened and better organized – and what role should BKF play in that process? These were the main questions when the Danish Association of Visual Artists invited to a development meeting at Kunstmuseum Brandts in Odense on Wednesday last week.
The meeting brought together a wide range of stakeholders from across the country and pointed out both common challenges and concrete proposals for action. After a welcome and presentation round, project manager Karen Mette Fog Pedersen presented the results of a questionnaire survey that BKF has conducted among the artistic exhibition venues, which showed great artistic energy and local anchoring – but also structural constraints.
Need for better financing and forms of support
A recurring theme was the need for more flexible and multi-year support. The Danish Arts Foundation's current model with only two annual application deadlines does not fit well with the reality of artist-run exhibition venues. Norwegian models were pointed out, where one can obtain operating support over three years, including for salaries and daily operations.
The meeting showed broad support for establishing a national network where artist-run venues can share experiences, coordinate activities and stand stronger together. BKF was encouraged to take on a facilitating role, for example through theme meetings and a common platform.
There were also requests for increased visibility – both in the art world and among the public. Joint opening days, a digital overview, physical maps and information campaigns were mentioned as possible measures.
Challenges in collaboration with municipalities
Several participants pointed out that municipal rules and restrictions are restrictive – for example in relation to opening hours, sales, use of premises and leases. There was a call for better understanding and artistic expertise in municipal administrations – and a proposal that BKF prepare information material for foundations and municipalities about the role and importance of artist-run exhibition spaces.
BKF is now working further with the many inputs - including the possibility of establishing a network that can help strengthen and make visible the importance of the work of artist-run exhibition venues across the country.
