As a visual artist who works in the field of abstraction, I am particularly aware of abstraction both as an artistic method and as a never-ending story building through existing works of abstract art. Having this double perspective enables me to focus on how abstraction seems to work very well in a multi perspective field: Abstraction seems to offer the possibilities that allow abstract works of art to play out non-mimetic intent through several worlds, or realities, at the same time. Through this multi-pod nature, abstract art can be approached from more than one viewpoint by creating an atmosphere or frame for reflection.
Julie Sass is a visual artist and curator based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Julie Sass (b.1971) studied visual art at the Danish Royal Art Academy in Copenhagen and at New York University in New York City (MFA), where she specialized in painting. Later she received her MA in Art Theory & Mediation from The Royal Danish Art Academy in Copenhagen.
Sass’ main focus has been on abstraction (painting) in its’ diverse forms. She has worked for Yoko Ono Studio and Gilbert and Lila Silverman’s’ Fluxus Collection as an assistant to Jon Hendricks, New York.
Her first curatorial project was in 1999 and she has initiated the ongoing exhibition project called LOKAL (Local, with Tomas Lagermand Lundme), where they focused on how contemporary art can interact (locally) in the urban environment, creating new spaces of meaning and understanding. Museum scale projects have been co-curated with Courtney J Martin, Milena Høgsberg, Bodil Nielsen at Nationalmuseet and Rønnebæksholm, dk.
Her work has been included in several collections, private and public. Recent public commissions (murals) are to be found at: Holbæk Art and at Nørre Gymnasium.
Sass has a great interest in artist books, and has published several hi-end versions with Steinprent, Hurricane Publishing, RSS Press, etc. In recent years, she has also done several readings of her own texts on various occasions, with multiple voices of several co- readers to push the author I, into a plural, we.
