AiR Nordic Artists’ Centre in Dale

27.02.24 | Residencies

Established in 1998, the Nordic Artists’ Centre in Dale is a non-profit contemporary art institution owned by a self-sustained foundation and mainly supported by the Arts Council Norway. Since its foundation, NKD has created opportunities for emerging and established artists, designers, architects and curators to research, develop their practices and network with colleagues.

Besides fostering a highly respected international art-residency programme, NKD also regularly promotes open studios, workshops, seminars and exhibitions to the public.

The centre is open all year round for residencies. Our residents receive monthly stipends, individual studios and separate living spaces all located on site at NKD.

WHO can apply

Professional visual artists, designers and architects are eligible to apply for a three (3) or two (2) month stay in 2025.

Note: The program is not available for students.

WHEN

Applications for less than 2 months will not be considered. The time slots will be allocated according to the first and the last day of the months you apply for. If you are invited, you might be offered a different time slot to the one you applied for.

WHAT we offer

We offer excellent accommodation and working conditions. The centre has five private residency houses, one for each artist, and five 50 m² studios with a 6-meter-high ceiling and north-lit panorama windows.

An additional communal studio and carpenter’s workshop furnished with a good selection of equipment and heavy machinery are also at disposal. The artists’ lodgings are fully equipped, and provided with wireless internet access.

The residency at the Nordic Artists’ Centre includes a monthly stipend of NOK 11.000,-. and round trip travel expenses up to NOK 5.000,-. Living and working spaces are free of charge.

WHERE we are

NKD is located in Dale in Fjaler municipality, north of the Sognefjord, on the west coast of Norway. The location is in a rather secluded area, at the edge of the forest and mountains.

Dale is a small fjord community with basic shops and a café. The nearest town, Førde is an hour away by bus. Bergen, the nearest city, can be reached by bus, boat or car within three hours.

ABOUT the stay

We expect the residents to make the best possible use of their time and the facilities with regard to their artistic work.

It is expected that you will give a presentation/lecture during your stay and that you will take part in an open studio day. Other events may be arranged. Note: We do not run an exhibition programme.
