Nail-to-nail - exhibition insurance

In connection with exhibitions, a so-called 'nail-to-nail' insurance must typically be made. This insurance covers the work from the time it leaves the artist's workshop until it is returned. This insurance should be paid by the venue.

Commercial insurance

It is necessary to make a commercial or business insurance if you want to protect yourself against the loss of your works, materials, machines, etc.

Ordinary contents insurance does not cover your business, but only your private contents. The scale of your artistic business determines whether it pays to insure your work.

Business insurance typically includes cover for the following conditions, but can otherwise be combined as needed:

  • Brand
  • Theft
  • Water damage
  • Operating loss
  • Responsibility

The compensation must, as a general rule, treat the policyholder as if the damage had not occurred. Materials and raw materials are generally replaced at replacement cost, while works and machinery are fixed at catalog price/new price.

When works are damaged, a dispute often arises as to whether it is possible to carry out repairs if the works are not completely damaged.

At exhibitions, it is important to make sure that the works are insured for the catalog price. The written exhibition or commission agreement should contain a passage to this effect. Transport insurance should also be taken out, see above under nail-to-nail.
