Exhibitions

BKF recommends that artists' fees are paid at all exhibitions in Denmark. You can read more about our recommendations here.

Minimum fees for artists' exhibitions at museums and art galleries in Denmark

Read the complete agreement on recommended minimum fees for artists exhibiting at museums in Denmark here..

An agreement on recommended minimum fees has been concluded between the Organization of Danish Museums (ODM), the Association of Art Galleries in Denmark (FKD) and the artists' organizations Visual Artists' Association (BKF), the Organization for Artists, Curators and Art Mediators (UKK) and the Artists' Union (KUFA).

  • Subsidy for any new art production is agreed separately
  • Viewing fees are determined as a minimum according to the statutory tariffs (see below)

Here you will find an overview of how art museums and art galleries in Denmark are distributed by number of visitors in relation to the above recommended minimum fees for artists in 2025.

SEE OVERVIEW HERE

The New Exhibition Agreement for exhibitions at Danish museums and art galleries.

Find the New Exhibition Agreement and other standard agreements for use in the art world here.

The New Exhibition Agreement sets out the general conditions for exhibitions, including insurance conditions, PR and dissemination, arrangements and finances in connection with the exhibition.

The New Exhibition Agreement has been drawn up in collaboration with the Association of Art Galleries in Denmark and UKK - Organization for Artists, Curators and Art Mediators and recommended by ODM - the Organization of Danish Museums and KUFA, the Artists' Union.

Additional remuneration for exhibitions

The Visual Artists' Association, the Artists' Trade Union and Danish Craftsmen and Designers have, in collaboration with VISDA, designed a new scheme whereby visual artists receive an extra remuneration for exhibition activities in Denmark. The scheme applies to all types of exhibitions by living visual artists. The payments will amount to DKK 1.000 to DKK 10.000 per person. A total of approximately one million kroner is set aside for the scheme per year.

As a visual artist, you apply by entering data about the exhibitions you have had in Denmark in the past year. The more activity, the greater the remuneration. You can apply for the additional remuneration in the period 1 January to 31 March each year, specifying exhibitions from the previous year.

Apply here at VISDA

Exhibitions in art associations, companies and in other contexts

BKF recommends that you use BKF's exhibition agreement for exhibitions in art associations, companies and in contexts where there is a need to determine the specific conditions surrounding an exhibition. The agreement speech template can be used directly or as a presentation for a negotiation about an exhibition agreement.

BKF's exhibition agreement sets out the general conditions for exhibitions, including, among other things, insurance conditions and artists' fees.

The exhibition organizer pays a fee to the artist for lending works of art. The remuneration is determined either as a purchase of a work or as a fee.

Find the Exhibition Agreement for art associations etc. here.

BKF has updated the list of art associations throughout the country. Please note that the list from here is updated with feedback from members. Members can write to BKF@BKF.dk with their member no. to get the list. We would appreciate if you let us know about any updates to the list.

Exhibitions at galleries

Viewing fee at state and state-supported museums, art galleries and other exhibition venues

The order on viewing fees ensures that, among other things, members of BKF receive remuneration when they lend their own works to exhibitions at state- and state-supported museums and art galleries. The scheme applies to:

  • Exhibitions with living visual artists, artisans and designers with main artistic work in Denmark.
  • Exhibitions organized by institutions under the Ministry of Culture, the state and state-recognised museums, state- and state-supported art galleries and other exhibition venues.
  • Only exhibition of original works that have not been sold to third parties. Original works also include temporary and site-specific works such as performance, digital art, etc., as well as unique handicrafts/design.

No later than 14 days after the end date of the exhibition, the institution must pay the exhibition fee to the artist. The amount can be settled as a fee or by invoice. If settlement is made by invoice, VAT must be added to the amount.

The amount of the viewing fee is calculated on the basis of rates determined in the executive order based on:

  • The artist receives 1% of the value of the original work per month the original work is exhibited.
  • The value of the work can be set at a maximum of the sum insured, corresponding to the sale price/catalogue price.* * The sale price/catalogue price can be documented, for example, in the form of a price list, art sale or the like.
  • The period is calculated from the date the exhibition opens to the public up to and including the exhibition's last opening day. The minimum period is 1 month, the maximum period is 6 months.
  • If the total value of work(s) that a single artist makes available exceeds DKK 750.000, however, only 1% of DKK 750.000 is paid.
  • The maximum monthly viewing fee is thus DKK 7.500** per artist per month for a maximum of 6 months. ** If the remuneration is invoiced by the artist, VAT must be added to the amount (the lending of works is considered a remuneration subject to VAT).
  • Regardless of the value of the works, the minimum remuneration is DKK 2.500 per artist.

Exhibitions in 'the service of a good cause'

Artists are often asked to make works or professional insight available in 'the service of the good cause'. In these contexts, it is a good idea to offer your expertise according to the principle: 'All for one'. It is recommended that remuneration is demanded if other contributors to the projects are remunerated.

Lending/renting of visual art
