BKF recommends the following model for determining artist fees in connection with art assignments:
The artist's fee is payment for the entire artwork, including the artist's work with sketch material, construction management, consulting, meetings, etc.
The artist's work in producing the artwork is not included in the artist's fee. Payment for this work must be included in the budget for the art production.
Reference is also made to BKF's general recommendations in connection with art assignments, standard agreements, etc.
The sketch proposal must contain a detailed description of the location, a list of the artwork's dimensions, materials, location, execution, financial estimate and the buyer's future maintenance of the artwork.
Reference is also made to BKF's standard agreement for sketching assignments.
Sketch assignments are determined based on the hourly rate for artistic work.
For competitions, open calls, etc., please refer to BKF's general recommendations.
Exhibitions at museums
An agreement on recommended minimum fees has been concluded between the Organization of Danish Museums (ODM), the Association of Art Galleries in Denmark (FKD) and the artists' organizations Visual Artists' Association (BKF), the Organization for Artists, Curators and Art Mediators (UKK) and the Artists' Union (KUFA).
Read the complete agreement on recommended minimum fees for artists exhibiting at museums in Denmark here.(The agreement is valid as of April 1, 2026)
Read the agreement that applies. till 1. April 2026 here.
When producing new works for exhibitions, BKF recommends that the exhibition venue contributes significantly with subsidies to the production of the works.
BKF recommends that the exhibition organizer always pays the exhibition fee. This also applies to exhibitions where the exhibition organizer is not legally obliged to pay the fee.
Exhibitions in the art association, etc.
For exhibitions in art associations etc., BKF recommends that payment of exhibition fees or for the sale of works is made after BKF's guidelines.
Reference is also made to BKF's general recommendations for artists' participation in exhibitions, standard agreements, etc.
Performing a performance is equated with creating an original work of art.
Performances are held in different formats and with a wide range in finances, actors, performance mode, etc.
BKF's recommended minimum price is based on the assumption that only 1 person participates in the performance and that the development costs for the production of the performance amount to a maximum of DKK 50.000, including the artist's salary for his own work. The price is adjusted if this basis deviates.
It is recommended that the organizer/customer bear all costs for transportation of people, works and equipment.
When driving in your own car, you will be billed according to the state's rates for commercial transport.
When teaching at college colleges, evening schools, technical schools, art academies, universities and other higher education institutions, reference is made to the established wage rates/collective agreement for the type of institution in question.
For example, check the hourly rate for the following institutions:
12% annually of catalog price. Minimum period: 3 months
Royalty payment is calculated based on the price list from VISDA, for example based on the following model; 15-25% of the recommended retail price excl. VAT, however min. DKK 1.000 per work.
The recommended retail price is the price at retail level, i.e. to the end customer (excluding customer discounts).
For marketing use, 200% is added to the price.
